Michigan State Basketball Eyes Strong Comeback as Head Coach Prepares Team for Challenging Season Ahead

East Lansing, MI – April 23, 2025

After a rollercoaster season filled with inconsistency and tough losses, Michigan State Basketball is setting its sights on a determined comeback. Head coach Tom Izzo, entering his 30th season at the helm, is spearheading an aggressive rebuilding strategy centered on discipline, unity, and revitalized energy.

“We didn’t meet our standards last season — plain and simple,” Izzo said during a recent press conference at the Breslin Center. “But this group has responded. They’re hungry, and we’ve made it clear: we’re getting back to Spartan basketball.”

Michigan State finished last year with a 17-15 record, falling short of their usual NCAA Tournament expectations. For a program steeped in tradition and known for March Madness success, the performance was a wake-up call.

This offseason, the coaching staff has been laser-focused on refining fundamentals and developing chemistry. Key returning players, including junior guard Jalen Thomas and senior forward Malik Horton, have taken leadership roles in off-season workouts, while a promising class of freshmen and transfers injects much-needed depth and versatility.

Among the standout newcomers is 6-foot-7 forward Bryce Cunningham, a five-star recruit touted for his two-way play. “Bryce has that intensity we’ve been looking for,” said assistant coach Mark Montgomery. “He’s the kind of player who fits our system — physical, smart, and relentless.”

Strategically, Izzo hinted at tweaks to both offense and defense, aiming for faster ball movement and tougher on-ball defense. “We’ve always prided ourselves on grit,” he said. “This year, we’re leaning back into that identity.”

Fans are taking notice, with early-season ticket sales trending up and preseason excitement building across East Lansing. “It feels like something special is brewing,” said long-time supporter Hannah Reid. “They look more focused, more together.”

Despite a demanding non-conference schedule and a highly competitive Big Ten landscape, optimism surrounds the Spartans. Izzo’s track record and the team’s renewed chemistry have reignited belief in another deep tournament run.

“We know what this program is about,” Izzo concluded. “We’re ready to prove that last year wasn’t who we are — this season is our chance to remind everyone.”
