Serious Accident Closes Major Road in Onslow County as Emergency Crews Respond
Onslow County, NC – April 23, 2025
A major traffic accident brought a key roadway in Onslow County to a standstill early Wednesday morning, prompting a rapid response from emergency services and a formal investigation by authorities. The incident, which occurred around 7:15 a.m. on U.S. Route 17 near the intersection with Dawson Cabin Road, involved multiple vehicles and caused extensive traffic delays throughout the area.

According to the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office, at least three vehicles were involved in what officials described as a “serious collision.” Emergency crews, including fire services, paramedics, and highway patrol units, responded swiftly to the scene. Air and ground ambulance services were deployed due to the severity of the crash, and several individuals were transported to local hospitals. The exact number of injuries remains unconfirmed, though officials indicated that some were “potentially life-threatening.”
Crash Details Still Emerging
While details of the cause remain under investigation, eyewitnesses reported seeing a pickup truck swerving erratically just before the crash. Moments later, the truck reportedly crossed into oncoming traffic, colliding head-on with a small SUV before a third vehicle became involved.
“I was driving about two cars behind when everything just stopped,” said Chris Darnell, a local commuter who witnessed the aftermath. “People were jumping out of their cars to help. It was chaos — glass everywhere, a lot of shouting, and smoke coming from one of the cars.”
Photos from the scene show severely damaged vehicles strewn across both sides of the road, with debris littering the asphalt. First responders used hydraulic rescue tools to free at least one occupant trapped inside their vehicle, according to the Onslow County Fire Department.
Road Closure and Traffic Disruptions
U.S. Route 17, a major thoroughfare connecting Jacksonville and other key areas of eastern North Carolina, remains closed in both directions as investigators work to reconstruct the scene and remove debris. Authorities have set up detours via Highway 24 and NC-53, and are urging motorists to avoid the area if possible.
“This is a complex scene that requires time and careful investigation,” said Sgt. Lisa Harmon of the North Carolina Highway Patrol. “We are working with local law enforcement and emergency services to ensure everyone’s safety and to determine exactly what happened.”
The closure has significantly impacted morning traffic, with long lines of vehicles rerouted through nearby neighborhoods and secondary roads. Some school bus routes were also delayed or altered, prompting Onslow County Schools to notify parents through their emergency alert system.
Community Response
As word of the crash spread, messages of concern and support began appearing across local social media pages. Several area residents expressed gratitude for the quick work of emergency crews, while others offered prayers for those injured.
“It’s heartbreaking to hear something like this has happened so close to home,” said Monica Hayes, a resident of nearby Piney Green. “I drive that stretch of road every day. You never know what could happen.”
Local organizations, including the American Red Cross of Eastern North Carolina, have offered support to any families affected by the crash. A crisis response team from Onslow County Emergency Management is also standing by to provide assistance.
Investigation Ongoing

Authorities have not yet released the names of those involved, pending notification of next of kin. Toxicology reports and witness interviews are expected to play a role in determining whether speed, distracted driving, or impairment were contributing factors.
As the investigation continues, Sgt. Harmon emphasized the importance of patience and caution. “This is a reminder of how quickly things can change on the road. Please drive carefully, wear your seatbelt, and stay alert — especially during rush hour.”
Officials expect the road to reopen later this evening, pending the completion of cleanup and investigation procedures.
